(TITC) - On 28th April, the Opening Ceremony of the 10th Southern Folk Cakes Festival 2023 with the theme “Preserving and promoting the value of Southern folk cakes” took place in Can Tho City.
This is a large-scale event, held annually in Can Tho, aiming to preserve and promote traditional cultural, culinary culture values of Tay Do (as the ‘capital’ of the Southern West) in particular, the Mekong Delta and provinces and cities in the country in general.

The Festival is organised to honour and promote Vietnamese cuisine and Southern folk cakes; gradually building folk cakes to become regional and national specialties, towards the export of products. At the same time, to create favourable conditions for cultural exchange between provinces and cities in the country; promote and develop tourism, contribute to socio-economic development of localities and the Mekong Delta region.
There are 300 booths of folk cakes, cuisine, regional specialties; 125 artisans, 29 units participating in the contest and performing hundreds of cakes to serve visitors at the Festival. Within the framework of the Festival, several folk games and activities also take place such as activities for students of primary and secondary schools in Can Tho, exchange programmes, learning to make cakes with artisans….

Speaking at the Opening Ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Thuc Hien, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People’s Committee said, Southern folk cake is a typical type of culture and cuisine of Southern people. During the working and producing, ethnic interference, people have creatively taken advantage of rice and sticky rice materials to process into folk cakes, containing deep cultural values, closeness and capturing many hearts of people and visitors.
The Southern Folk Cake Festival has become an important tourism event in order to preserve and promote the cultural and culinary values of Vietnam in general and the folk values of the South in particular. The festival also aims to honour the labour and creativity of folk artisans; to promote folk cakes to become a specialty of the South and the Can Tho City's tourism to develop and integrate into the world.

The Southern Folk Cakes Festival 2023 takes place from 28th April to 2nd May 2023 at Binh Thuy District Square, Can Tho City.
